Common Questions

Find answers to your Medicare questions here.

Medicare is health insurance for:

  • People 65 or older
  • Certain people under 65 with disabilities
  • People of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease)

You can enroll in Medicare during the initial enrollment period, which starts three months before you turn 65 and lasts for seven months. You can sign up online, by phone, or in person at your local Social Security office.

  • Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B
    (Medical Insurance).
    Part A helps cover:
  • Inpatient care in a hospital
  • Inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility (not custodial or long-term care)
  • Hospice care
  • Home health care
  • Inpatient care in a religious non-medical health care institution

You usually don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A coverage if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes while working for a certain amount of time. This is sometimes called premium-free Part A. If you aren’t eligible for premium-free Part A, you may
be able to buy Part A.

Part B helps cover:

  • Medically necessary services from doctors and other health care providers
  • Outpatient care
  • Home health services
  • Durable medical equipment (DME) (like wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, and other equipment)
  • Preventive services (like screenings, shots or vaccines, and yearly “Wellness” visits)

Most people pay the standard Part B premium amount.
Note: Original Medicare covers most, but not all costs for medically necessary services and supplies. Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policies are sold by private companies, and can help pay some remaining health care costs, like co-payments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Yes! You can switch Medicare plans during specific times, like the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) or if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. We can help you find the best option for your needs.

The insurance companies take care of me, so it never costs you a thing and the cost of your plan is the same either way.

Costs vary based on plan choices. Some plans give money back towards your part B premium as well!

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans combine your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage – and may also include Part D (prescription drug coverage) – all in one convenient plan. Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing or fitness memberships. Depending on your location and eligibility, some plans may have a $0 premium. Some may include a Part B premium reduction, sometimes called a “giveback”. If you’re eligible and enroll in one of these plans, you could see a portion of your Part B premium refunded in your Social Security Check each month.

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of your prescription medications. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and can be added to Original Medicare or some Medicare Supplement Plans. Each plan has its own list of covered drugs (called formulary) and may have different pharmacies, copays and coverage rules – so it’s important to find one that fits your specific medications. Need help finding the right fit? That’s what I’m here for. Sometimes Part D is included in Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans.
Medicare Supplement plans – also known as Medigap – help pay for some of the costs that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) doesn’t cover, like deductibles, copays and coinsurance. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and work alongside Original Medicare, not in place of it. There are several standardized plan options, so you can choose the level of coverage that works best for you. Think of it as filling in the gas to you can worry less about surprise bills.

Yes—moving can affect your Medicare coverage. If you’ve changed your address (especially to a new ZIP code, county, or state), you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This gives you a limited time—usually up to 2 months after your move—to choose a new Medicare Advantage or Part D drug plan that works in your new area.

Not sure where to start? I can help you check your eligibility and walk through your options—quickly and clearly. Just reach out, and we’ll take care of it together.

You may qualify for help with your Medicare costs through programs like Extra Help, Medicaid, or other assistance programs. It’s a good idea to check your eligibility.
